VERNON, CT Longtime Vernon police department member William Meier, often the face of the department at crime scenes as the public information officer, is retiring from the force to take on the role as the school system s new director of business and finance.
Vernon Superintendent of Schools Joseph Macary made the announcement Monday evening following approval by the board of education.
Meier, 42, will officially make the switch on July 7, a week into the new fiscal year.

VERNON, CT Work began progressing Thursday on three solar panel projects at three Vernon schools.
At Lake Street School, brush toward the rear of the property was cleared last week and equipment was being transported via a makeshift road that traveled behind the existing playscape Thursday. Solar panels will be installed toward the rear of the backpacking area, school system officials said.

At Northeast School, heavy materials were being shuffled around the back parking lot Thursday. Eventually solar panels will find their way to the rooftop.

VERNON, CT The public school system in Vernon is beginning the second hundred days of the 2020-21 academic year with two new school board members.
Jennifer Buckler and Kristina Wintress were officially seated Monday.
The Vernon Town Council endorsed them on Feb. 2 and they were sworn in Feb. 4.

Both were appointed by the Democratic Town Committee after Michele Arn and Latasha Hyatt stepped down, citing personal reasons.

VERNON, CT Vernon Town Administrator Michael Purcaro and the local town council this week agreed to a new four-year contract with performance-based raises.
The council Tuesday unanimously approved the deal. Purcaro is also Vernon s director of emergency and risk management, a position he has maintained since 2004.
Purcaro became Vernon s town administrator in October 2017, moving over from a six-year stint as the director of business and finance for the local public schools system

The four-year contract focuses on what council members termed performance and results. It does not include a specific pay raise, but a range of zero to 3 percent based upon annual performance reviews that will be completed by the Mayor. A satisfactory review yields a 1.5 percent raise, while a superior or outstanding evaluation would result in up to a 3 percent salary increase. The
