Anti-Asian violence in New York right now is more than random street-corner sucker punches and terrifying subway shoves. It’s also the deliberate disassembly of meritocratic public education under the guise of ethnic equity a dagger to the heart of the fastest-growing and arguably most dynamic immigrant group in the city.
Not to diminish the thuggery, the most serious threat to Asian American New Yorkers is the Department of Education’s ill-disguised effort to eliminate merit test-based admission to the city’s eight highly selective high schools. The process is dominated by Asian kids to the virtual exclusion of Black and Hispanic students.

Ross-Porter called the current test which is overwhelmingly aced by Asian students unacceptable.
Some members of the Ozone Park Residents Block Association group on Facebook called for Ross-Porter s resignation, claiming she was unfairly attacking the hard working, low income Asian minority group.

New York City Schools Chancellor Calls On State To End Specialized High Schools Admissions Test

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) The results are in following the Department of Education’s Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) and some say it’s the test that’s not making the grade.
The results show the percentage of Black and Latino students receiving offers is down
again. CBS2’s Hazel Sanchez reports Schools Chancellor Meisha Ross Porter is calling on the state to eliminate the test.
Tenth grader Maelena Vega took the SHSAT when she was in 8th grade. Her artistry landed her a coveted spot at LaGuardia High School, but her testing score earned her an offer at one of the elite eight high schools that require the SHSAT.
Residents Push For Asian-American History To Be Taught In Schools
“The recent surge in anti-Asian hate crimes and violence has highlighted the woefully inadequate education pertaining to Asian American history that our children receive,” the letter reads.

On Monday, over 2,500 Asian-American New Yorkers, most of them parents, signed an open letter addressed to Mayor Bill de Blasio and Schools Chancellor Meisha Ross-Porter, calling for Asian-American history to be taught in New York City public schools. Over 750 of those signatures came from members of Brooklyn’s Asian-American community. The open letter was created by Xia Li, Ting Yu, and Joseph Chou, parents at Queens’ MS 158 Marie School in Bayside, Queens, as well as Yiatin Chu and Lulu Song, whose children attend PS184M Shuang Wen School in Chinatown.
