Public hearing on GJSD budget held | News, Sports, Jobs

GREG HITCHCOCK The Leader-Herald Greater Johnstown School District Superintendent William Crankshaw during Tuesday night’s budget hearing. (The Leader-Herald/Greg Hitchcock) JOHNSTOWN Taxpayers will see a tax levy increase of 3.8 percent if voters of the Greater Johnstown School District passes the district’s 2021-22 $39.9 million budget on May 18. “We are asking for what our students and teachers need and the community can afford,” School Superintendent William Crankshaw said at a public hearing at the Johnstown High School auditorium on May 4. The budget provides financial support for an expanded academic program, including an elementary school art teacher, a math teacher, and a behavior specialist. Currently, there is only one elementary art teacher teaching 751 students; there is a great need for math to remain competitive in a 21st century high technology market; and there is a deficit in providing emotional support to special needs students.
