19 people were down. Six of them died. That was an extended clip. The gunman had another one in his pocket and two shorter ones in his pocket and had it not been for the quick action, the courageous action of people there, he would have loaded and 30 more bullets would have been discharged. I come to this issue as a parent and a grandparent. I was on my way to the rural part of my district on friday when i heard the news about the shootings in connecticut. First i heard three had died. That was bad enough, and then i heard 20 children had died. I was devastated. I have two grandchildren the same age as the children who were shot and killed in newtown, connecticut. On sunday, when i opened the newspaper to read about the shootings, i saw a photograph of one of the children who was killed. Her name was emily. A little blondehaired girl with a beautiful smile. She looked at me from the paper, i saw my granddaughters elsa and tilly looking back at me. So i come to this issue as a grandpare
Things, you know, id threat cant agree with all of your points but i agree with your basic will go because there is always a disconnect between what is provided to folks, whether it is the gas tax that goes to building roads and highways that people use every day but not realizing that they are paying for that. A variety of other things that people use that the tax system paid for but not realizing that connection. So the whole idea you bring up, stephen, that you believe that to connect the taxes they are paying with what they are getting in some respects, i agree with you and that is one of the challenges. On the first point, i take exception to you saying that my request for raising the cap on Social Security is a kneejerk reaction. Kneejerk reaction is a description of Somebody Just sort of making a decision without thinking about it. I have put a lot of thought on the issue. You and i may disagree on the best solution but i put a lot of thought into it and i think it is the best s
Theaters, our businesses in our offices. In the only thing consistent and all of them is the guns. I would like to introduce one of our cosponsors of the legislation we hope to introduce a lot with the house of representatives, the senior senator from the greek state of connecticut going the great state of connecticut going through a difficult time. Thank you. Let me first thank you for your leadership going back to 1993 and before when i was speaking to advocate in the state of connecticut a similar law to the one adopted here banning assault weapons. This has been a heroin, terrific week in the state of connecticut, culminating in todays moment of silence at 9 30. The end of the week and i spent the better part of the time meeting with first responders, families, going to funerals and wakes and speaking with ordinary people of newtown and the state of connecticut. The refrain i have heard over and over again from newtown and connecticut and all the run the country is you need to do s
He would sign a bill before january to extend tax cuts for most americans. His remarks came as congress leaves washington without a plan to avoid the fiscal cliff. The president said he hoped any deal to avoid the fiscal cliff would also include and extension of Unemployment Insurance and lay this is about 7 minutes. Good afternoon, everybody. For the last few weeks, i have been working with the leaders of both parties on a proposal to get our deficit under control, to avoid tax cuts to avoid tax hikes on the middleclass. And to make sure we can spur jobs and economic growth. A balanced proposal that cuts spending, but also ask the wealthiest americans to pay more, a proposal that will strengthen the middle class over the long haul, and our economy over the long haul. In the course of these negotiations, i offered to compromise with republicans in congress. I met them halfway on taxes and more than halfway on spending. Today, i am still willing to get a comprehensive package done. I st
