When Southern Boone senior Alex Volkart was leading the front of the pack Saturday in the Class 3 girls cross country state championships, she would look over her shoulder from time to time, checking on her competition. With about 1,000 meters to go, Volkart took another peek over her shoulder. Nobody was there. Volkart repeated as the Class 3 state champion, striding across the finish line with a winning time of 18:27.0 to lead the field of 171 runners.
