事故は4月24日、同市若松区の高須中の体育館で発生。バスケ部1年女子生徒が折り畳み式ゴールの下でレバーを回して支柱を伸ばす際、ゴールリングの付いたボードが支柱から外れて壁に当たった後、女子生徒の顔に当たり、左目の上を3針縫うけがをした。ボードは大人数人でなければ持ち上げられない重さだったといい、市教委は溶接部分の劣化が原因とみている。
市教委などによると、落下したゴールの製造者は記録などが残っておらず不明だが、市内の多くの学校で体育施設機器メーカー「セノー」（千葉県松戸市）のゴールが使われている。
