Cafeteria personnel kept children fed

While school districts were closed down this time a year ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic, food service workers throughout northeast Indiana continued to perform their jobs above and beyond anything they ever dreamed possible. “It was a learning curve that changed rapidly and frequently,” said Stephanie Haynes-Clifford, food service director for the Metropolitan School District of Steuben County. “I think they responded absolutely wonderful,” she said. “Food service professionals are in these buildings every day feeding these children because they care about them and they want to know they’re taken care of. “They’re obviously not in it because of the money, and in these unprecedented times, they were willing to step up and do what was necessary to continue to feed their children.”

Steuben districts receive American Rescue Plan grants

The grants to each district include: • Metropolitan School District of Steuben County, $3.165 million • Prairie Heights Community School Corporation, $1.637 million • Hamilton Community Schools, $803,332 • Fremont Community Schools, $1.068 million With the money, schools can reimburse approved expenses incurred through September 2024 that address some of the greatest challenges they continue to face as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Federal requirements say schools must use at least 20% of the money to support accelerated learning opportunities for students, as schools work to make up for instructional time lost due to COVID-19. Evidence-based interventions may include summer learning or enrichment, comprehensive afterschool programs, extended school years programs and other solutions.

ANGOLA — Members of the Northeast Indiana School Insurance Trust now have access to Activate Health and Wellness Center, 3270 Intertech Drive, for health and wellness support at no cost to its members, spouses, dependents and retirees enrolled in the health plan. Tuesday, an open house and ribbon cutting took place in Angola to celebrate the new clinic and to let people get a peek at the new facility which is located in the same building as Angola Physical Therapy.
