Several new children's books are claiming honors alongside the famed Newbery and Caldecott Medals for featuring storylines focused on the experiences of those with disabilities.

Ali/Used with permission) MOSCOW, ID Idaho author Annette Bay Pimentel recently received notification her children s book, All the Way to the Top: How One Girl s Fight for Americans with Disabilities Changed Everything was awarded the 2021 Schneider Family Book Award. The awards committee had our publisher arrange a Zoom call to break the news to us. It was a thrill to listen with Jennifer Keelan-Chaffins, who the book is about, as committee members talked about why they valued the book, said Pimentel. We are excited that this award will help connect more kids with our book.

(Penguin Random House) Tales about a girl with autism and a boy who’s nonverbal are among the books being honored for portraying the disability experience as part of a prestigious award given alongside the famed Newbery and Caldecott Medals. The American Library Association said this week that it has named three winners and four honorees for its annual Schneider Family Book Awards. The awards recognize authors and illustrators for books aimed at each of three age groups: young children, middle grades and teen. To qualify, stories must “portray the emotional, mental or physical disability as part of a full life, not as something to be pitied.”
