sandra: meanwhile as we ve been mentioning president trump right now is on his way to north carolina to visit areas hard hit by the flooding there in the wake of hurricane florence. he is about to arrive at a military base for a briefing on recovery efforts. we re going to head down now to one of the hardest-hit areas. griff jenkins is live in pollocksville, north carolina. it is just about 20 miles west of where the president will land. this is what he will see when he looks out the window of air force one. this drone footage shot by the jones county sheriffs office shows the total devastation of an entire town, a small town totally cut off from civilization and under water. this is the same scene playing across north carolina. the governor saying 16 rivers at flood stage. three more that may crest. sandra: seems like we lost griff there. he has been in some of the
around the clock, even while some of their own homes have burned down. abc s linzie janis is on the front lines. reporter: tonight, firefighters on the nuns fire desperately trying to save homes in already devastated santa rosa. these guys fighting this fire have just called for air support. this helicopter is about to drop water on this fire. now, nearly 8,000 acres, and just 2% contained. we re trying to make a path for it, so it comes up to that path and then it stops. reporter: today, better visibility means they can attack the fires from the air. it s a scene playing out all over this county. we met one crew defending a neighborhood for 48 hours solid. the flames coming dangerously close to this home. this fire s so big and the resources are spread so thin that we re just dealing with what we got. reporter: 8,000 firefighters, 550 engines and 124 aircraft all racing to put out these fires
the army corps of engineers is starting a controlled release at two galveston dams ahead of schedule. emergency crews are working around the clock to rescue the thousands of people still stranded in high water. cnn s alex marquardt is live in the suburbs of houston with the latest. what s happening there, alex? good morning, alisyn. we are seeing a brief lull in the rain. make no mistake, much more is coming and is about to get worse. this is a scene playing out all across this city. this is an on-ramp for the interstate 610, right back there about 100 feet away is an suv almost completely submerged. that s about four feet of water. to give you a sense of how much rain has fallen. yesterday at the houston airport they broke the record for rainfall, 16 inches. that s double the previous record set in 1945. there is an all-hands-on-deck rescue effort under way, local
the pictures of those living it in texas. and the fact that you were able to catch that rescue mid-rescue, hopefully that s a scene playing on all around the most devastated areas of houston and beyond. scott, thank you to you and your crew for wading in the water for us just to show how bad it is. forecasters are predicting no let-up for texas. this storm is expected to gather more moisture before making the unwelcomed return to land. chad myers is watching this from the weather center for us. and then i also saw, chad, they urged the national weather service flash flood warnings to be extended in six texas counties. right. because it s still raining. there was a break this morning where the rain really did taper off nicely. and it did look like maybe one or two inches from houston all the way back to beaumont earlier today. now the number is going up because these storms itself, the center is right there, now half of the storm is back over the gulf of mexico. so it has half the str
