As the U.S. launches a campaign to vaccinate teens against COVID-19, public-health officials are leaping into action on a new strategy designed to involve family doctors, pediatricians and schools.
Parents can bring their children to existing providers for the Pfizer Inc.-BioNTech SE shot following this weekâs authorization of the vaccine for use in those ages 12 to 15. But a federal advisory board suggested Wednesday that a new family-oriented approach will help improve both access and equity.
There are almost 17 million kids that age in the U.S., or about 5.3% of the population. Now the nation will mobilize to protect that demographic.

Westchester County is ready to welcome a fresh wave of residents seeking the COVID-19 vaccine as the CDC approved it for use in children between the ages of 12 and 15.
This week, the FDA approved emergency use of the Pfizer vaccine in children, followed by the CDC recommending that parents go get their children vaccinated.
Now, Westchester County Executive George Latimer said that he is welcoming parents and children to sites set up by the Health Department to vaccinate those that are newly eligible.
Latimer said that the Westchester County Center is now taking patients 12 and up to administer Pfizer vaccines, with walk-ins or appointments accepted with parental consent.

An allegedly drunk driver attempted to flee the scene of an early morning crash over the weekend before ultimately being apprehended by police in Westchester.
An officer from the Scarsdale Police Department on patrol shortly after 1:15 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 2 received notification of a multi-car crash near the intersection of Meadow Road and Hutchinson Avenue, with at least one vehicle’s airbags being deployed.
According to police, the officer received a report from Scarsdale Volunteer Ambulance Corp. crews, who advised that one of the drivers had left the scene in a dark-colored vehicle with heavy front-end damage that was on Hutchinson Avenue driving toward Weaver Street.
