After a surprise ouster from the Atlantic 10 Tournament quarterfinals in 1991, Rutgers needed to sweat out its NCAA Tournament fate.
“It was agonizing not knowing if we were in or not,’ then-Scarlet Knights coach Bob Wenzel said at the time.
But when Rutgers appeared in the NCAA Tournament field on the selection show, Wenzel let his emotions go.
“When I saw us up there, I jumped up and hugged my wife,’ he told reporters on March 10, 1991. “I forgot to even look at who we were playing.’

If there was any doubt about Rutgers’ chances, that was answered when Pikiell’s squad persevered for an overtime win over Minnesota last weekend.
Go ahead and find a bracketologist who doesn’t have Rutgers in the field of 68. You won’t find one, which means all that awaits between now and Sunday evening is the anticipation of where the Scarlet Knights will be seeded and who they will meet in their first-round game.
“I haven’t spent a lot of time with that,’ Pikiell said following the Scarlet Knights’ Big Ten Tournament ouster at the hands of Illinois on Friday night. “I’m just going to be excited to have the opportunity to continue playing. I like this team a lot, and I want to put our uniforms up (in the locker room). I do think we can do some exciting things.’
