From the time he gathered his players for their first team meeting in September until his locker-room speech following Rutgers’ loss to Nebraska on Friday night, coach Greg Schiano’s message was consistent.
COVID-19 was the team’s most dangerous opponent, an invisible enemy that conquered the majority of the Scarlet Knights’ Big Ten rivals during a college football season unlike any other.
“Our No. 1 enemy, our No. 1 opponent, is the virus,” Schiano told reporters on Oct. 7, relaying the message he had just told his players. “You have to stay healthy just so we can have an opportunity to go play at full force and see if we’re better than who we’re playing. It’s an ongoing challenge for all of us.”
