Avondale looks to future after £10m deal

A SCOTTISH care home company has expanded its portfolio after securing a £10.2 million funding package. Family-owned Avondale Care Scotland was supported in its acquisition of the Glenbervie residential care home in Falkirk with the loan from Barclays. The funds will also be used to provide facilities in its other care homes. Glenbervie is the fourth in the Avondale portfolio, which includes Carrondale Care Home in Falkirk, and Benore Care Home and Lister House in Lochore, Fife. The company also runs Robert Allan House, situated within Lister House, which offers specialist care to adults aged between 18 and 65 with complex needs. The business was established in 1987 by Allan Hendry, and is now operated by his sons Graeme and Adrian Hendry. It employs around 550 people.

The plight of people living and dying in care homes, needing home care and those who provide it have focused attention on the sector. And demographic pressures are growing. One of the answers in party manifestos is the promise of a National Care Service. What does that mean, what would it look like, what would it cost, and what are the downsides? What is the need? One in 24 Scots relied on some form of social care support and services at the start of 2018. Some 68,000 required care support at home, apart from informal, unpaid care, often by family members. Care homes housed 34,000 people.
