Christchurch student tricked out of $30,000 in online dating scam

A Christchurch International student has been scammed out of more than $30,000 after a man tricked her into believing they were dating and encouraged her to hand over cash for him to invest in cryptocurrency.
The woman, 28-year-old Christine, thought she had found her match when a handsome man began speaking to her on Facebook in February this year.
Christine said he also claimed to be Chinese, and told her he was a busy, hard-working finance worker that didn t have time for a real girlfriend and was scared he d end up alone.

GARDAÍ HAVE ISSUED a warning after a dramatic increase in the number of incidents of fraud happening around the country.
In a statement this evening, garda management said that someone is falling victim to a scam every day of the week.
Provisional figures show that this type of fraud has increased fivefold for the first 20 days of April 2021 compared to April 2019.
Gardaí have recently highlighted scams where people are pretending to be from An Garda Síochána, Social Welfare, the Attorney General’s Office, banks, delivery companies and other businesse

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KAIT) - A new bill in the Arkansas Legislature looks to prevent the senior population of Arkansas from being scammed.
Filed by Rep. Carlton Wing (R-North Little Rock) and State Sen. Jonathan Dismang (R-Beebe), HB1391 would allow financial institutions to report potential exploitation cases to the Attorney General’s office.
The bill could put a freeze on account transactions while being investigated.

How could someone be so stupid? I ve heard myself say this when I see yet another news item about someone falling for a romance scam, or email phishing. Shame on me. It turns out that, until recently, I d fallen into a trap of victim-blaming that needs to be stamped out. When we blame victims, we take the blame off the offenders.
The woman, whose name is known to The Herald, is referred to by residents as the Vleisvrou [meat lady] due her self-proclaimed ability to get most products for less than you would pay at a shop.
