Abby Drew was on the edge of a bleacher seat in Mexico’s Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon, the combination of excitement and exhaustion causing her to tremble.
“Look,” she said, stretching out an arm. “I’m shaking.”
Moments earlier the Bulldogs 122 pounder had bested Fulton’s Emma Oglesby in an epic four overtime match full of plot twists, claiming an 11-10 decision that sent Drew to the third place match. And almost the same time on the second mat, Kaylynn Pehle’s sudden move with 30 seconds left gave her a 10-6 win over Camdenton’s Lucinda Baker and a spot in the 132-pound consolation final.

The Bulldogs were busy over an extended weekend that began on Thursday at home against Fulton and continued through two tournaments. Katie Bowen and Abbigale Drew took gold at the Gary Haag Invitational. Bowen added another first at the Liberty North Soaring Eagle event, while Drew came home with silver. Kaylynn Pehle added to the success, winning the 132 class at Liberty North. Drew faced a crowded field at the Gary Haag and swept it clean – four matches, four pins. The strong outing put her at 14-9 on the season, wrestling at 122. She recovered from an opening round defeat at Liberty North to record back to back pins and a silver medal.
