NPCA position on the nomination of Deb Haaland for Secretary of the Interior

NPCA sent the following letter of support to the United States Senate ahead of the hearing to consider the nomination of Deb Haaland for Secreatary of the Interior.  Our national parks are symbols of conservation, historic preservation and heritage we share with all Americans. In the last four years, as we witnessed weakened protection for cultural resources, wildlife, waterways and the list goes on, the highest level of protection was not afforded to these incredible places. In a Thursday presentation from the Wilderness Alliance, the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Sierra Club, SUWA board member Regina Lopez-Whiteskunk said America s Red Rock Wilderness Act presents an extraordinary opportunity.

Later, I learned that was not exactly true (after all, there are deer too). In all seriousness though, visiting the mountains and forests of Maine made me realize that this is where I wanted to be. But things are changing. Across the nation, we are losing our wild places, little chunks of ourselves bit by bit. As environmental devastation encroaches and the impacts of climate change continue to mount, the cost of inaction is steep. More and more species are threatened or going extinct. The Gulf of Maine is one of the fastest warming bodies of water in the world, which already is impacting the lobster fishery. These problems are happening to us, right now.
