The Conversation: New Grants Help Expand Telehealth Statewide

Credit Wikimedia Commons New grants seek to expand telehealth throughout the state Due to stay-at-home orders and limited in-person doctor appointments, telehealth has become a literal lifeline for some patients during the pandemic. But challenges like lack of broadband access, technology, and training have comprised many clinics attempts at implementing a telehealth program. Chris Van Bergeijk, senior vice president and chief impact officer at Hawaii Community Foundation, wants to change that. Along with HMSA and the Freeman Foundation, her organization has provided $1.3 million in grants to get telehealth service off the ground in fourteen federally qualified health centers across the state.

A virtual event this Saturday will show you the way. The event, called It’s Great to Be a Teacher, is organized by the state Teacher Education Coordinating Committee, whose members include educator preparation programs and the state Department of Education, Hawaii State Teachers Association, and the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s College of Education. Nezia Asni and Janet Kim are with UH Manoa’s College of Education and organizers of the event, which is now available for free via Zoom.

The Latest: 57 New Cases Statewide; DOH, Honolulu Conduct Vaccine Distribution Training

• Dec 15, 2020 Daniel Dennison (State of Hawaii) The state Department of Health and the City and County of Honolulu yesterday conducted a vaccination distribution exercise to immunize those in the state s Phase 1 priority group. Those in the first group include: essential healthcare workers, long-term care facility residents and staff, and first responders. Monday s exercise smiulated standing up vaccine clinics to provide the COVID-19 vaccinations. According to the DOH, Honolulu s exercise is the first of a number of drills planned statewide to prepare to safely and efficiently administer the vaccine. The state has been conducting medical countermeasure distribution exercises and vaccination clinics for years, and our training and planning with public and private stakeholders is making a huge difference, said Judy Kern, chief of the DOH s Office of Public Health Emergency Preparedness.
