The Middlesex-London Health Unit declared two new COVID-19 outbreaks at Western University and King’s University College student residences Friday.
The health unit reported an outbreak at Perth Hall residence off Western Road and King’s announced seven people tested positive at King’s Commons on Richmond Street. All are in quarantine.

“Now is not the time to socialize with others. The variants of concern are making younger people sick, and are much more transmissible,” King’s principal David Malloy said in a statement.
MIDDLESEX CENTRE, ONT. The Middlesex-London Health Unit has declared two new outbreaks at Western University affiliated residences. The outbreaks are at Perth Hall Residence and King s Commons College Western Affiliate Residence. They bring the total number of residences with active outbreaks to eight, in addition to several community outbreaks affiliated with the university. MIDDLESEX CENTRE, ONT. The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) is reporting 126 new COVID-19 cases, but no new deaths Wednesday. The total marks a return to the weekend s higher case counts after two days of daily totals in the 70s. The previous three days saw a daily average of just over 120 cases. The region now has a total of 7,825 cases, with 948 active, 6,687 resolved and 190 deaths. There are nine confirmed B.1.1.7 variant cases and 466 have screened positive for a variant of concern. The London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) says it is handling nine staff and 27 inpatients positive for COVID-19, with 12 in intensive care, of which seven are from other regions.

With six outbreaks in less than a week, Western University students’ ‘res-life’ has been cut short.
Western is asking students to move their things out of dorms if possible. This comes after outbreaks were declared in Ontario Hall (Mar. 25), Saugeen-Maitland Hall (Mar. 26), Elgin Hall (Mar. 30), Medway-Sydenham Hall (Mar. 31), Delaware Hall (Apr. 2), Essex Hall (Apr. 4).
“No one’s at fault, because no one wants to be in this sort of situation. But, should the school still have people in residence? That’s kind of what it boils down to. Sometimes you can’t help but think, they are the ones sort of allowing it to progress to the stage that it’s getting to” First-year student, Charlie Smith says.
