out their things, generators cranking. a lot of activity on the highway. earth movers clearing the sand. but little hints here of how powerful the storm was. lobster traps from the atlantic side thrown into neighborhoods on this side. we re working our way slowly but surely down to the lower keys where the eyewall of that storm came ashore, and that s where the most concern is for human life. there s no way to confirm who may have perished or like the rest of us just doesn t have cell service. even our satellite phones are really spotty, so it is primitive down here. no power, no running water. everybody on the hunt for precious gasoline. ice is a luxury down here that will bring people to the edge of tears with joy as they find some. but i m hearing a lot of resolve, very little self-pity
that person and said, can we come stay with you, we feel like it s more of a secure home. so they fell back to that area. they re starting to get through here. one of the things we ve seen is there are lines down almost everywhere. it s very difficult to navigate through these roads. there are boats in the roads. a lot of the marinas, a lot of the waterways, the boated flooded out and have now landed in the road so it s difficult to navigate around them with cars. so some of these areas that have been inaccessible until now, people getting out with tow straps. but very dangerous because a lot of these lines are still down and it s unclear whether or not they re going to be re-energized as the electric company tries to restore power to this area. try to help those people while you have those satellite phones. call their families. absolutely. all right, let s turn now to nbc s morgan radford. she s live in jacksonville where we have seen record setting amounts of flooding. morgan,
in on c-130s and various other helicopters because that might be the only way and probably will be the only way to get resources down to the lower keys. do you anticipate that you will have communication with people who have stayed behind? if power lines go down and people can t charge their phones, phone lines goes down, what s the concern about being cut off from communications? we have satellite phones set up. so far our cell phones are working, at least mine is up here. i don t know how it could be down there. but, yeah. we re very concerned. we ve got a couple special situations with these phones set up so that we will be in constant communication with key west we re hoping any way. then once the storm gets past, the biggest thing is to clear the runways at the airport if key west and also at the naval air station eight miles from there, so that we can get
habitable for people who are on twitter. for about nine to 11 hours, this island was cut off. there was no word from this island. there was no phones. there was no communication whatsoever. they finally got some satellite phones up there. you see the helicopter shots. they were final able to get a look at that island. totally devastated. now to st. martin. this is an island shared by the french and the dutch, and there has been looting. roofs were shredded. boats were torn to pieces. you can see some of the damage there. the dutch have put troops onto the streets of st. martin now because they re saying two-thirds of the houses on that island are, quote, uninhabitable. no electricity, no gas, no water. the french ministry saying, quote, scenes of pillaging. i ll take you to the u.s. and british virgin islands. the thing we re hearing is help or jose. can they get the help in before jose come as cross these islands
helicopters. we have a system in which the communication system was totally destroyed so for example we re seeing cell towers broken in two. so is the island cut off? well, it was, that is why it took so long, because we couldn t get any phone communication. they had a hand system there which was destroyed. they even had a few satellite phones and apparently they got damaged during the storm. so they had absolutely no mechanism to communicate with us. it was too treacherous for any boats to go over to barbuda, and even by helicopter, but a few of us went over there and risked the elements by helicopter to get an idea of what was happening. because we noticed by 2 or 3:00 a.m. this morning we didn t have any form of communication from barbuda. in some of the video we saw that the cell phone tower just snapped. in terms of fatalities, what did
