New Creative Space
Artlink is working with Park Central Mall and Gould Evans to transform nearly 20,000 square feet of basement space at the mall into a multidisciplinary space for Arizona artists. Community members can take virtual or online tours this month, and suggest best uses for the space by completing a survey. Organizers have not announced a timeline of next steps for the project.

The Four Seasons on an outdoor stage at Desert Botanical Garden, where 15 performances are scheduled between May 18 and June 5. Set to the music by Vivaldi, it marks the first large-scale public performance for the ballet company since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Amid their own isolation and economic challenges, Phoenix-area artists continued to create works that inspired thoughtful consideration of the shifting cultural, social, and political landscape. A lot of it just happened outside or online this year. Here’s a look at 11 of our favorites.
Social Justice Murals
Phoenix artists have a long history of creating art exploring social justice themes, from immigration to indigenous rights. This year, several artists created work reflecting the struggle against police brutality and racial injustice. Six artists collaborated on a Black Lives Matter mural in Roosevelt Row, and Antoinette Cauley’s portrait of James Baldwin was installed on the Ten-O-One building. Murals featured portraits of George Floyd, Dion Johnson, Breonna Taylor, and others killed by law enforcement officers were painted as well, highlighting the ways art and activism are often intertwined during times of social upheaval.

Holidays at the Heard
Head to the Heard Museum on Saturday or Sunday, December 26 or 27, to enjoy Holidays at Heard, which includes live music and artists demonstrations between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. If you’d also like to explore the museum, you’ll need to pay admission, which is $20 for adults (or $17 if purchased online in advance). Current exhibits include “Larger Than Memory” and “All at Once: The Gift of Navajo Weaving.”
Snow Week
Arizona Science Center launches this year’s Snow Week on Saturday, December 26. Instead of having a pile of snow on a big hill, the center will have several activities inspired by the science of ice and snow. It’s included with admission, which is $14.95 for adults. There’s an additional cost for tickets to planetarium or film experiences, as well as the “Victoria the T. rex” exhibit.
