A high commissioner is the equivalent to an ambassador in Commonwealth countries. According to the release, Goodale will provide “strategic advise” to Trudeau on relations with the United Kingdom. The release cited post-Brexit trade, climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic as key priorities for cooperation between the two countries.
Goodale was first elected to Parliament in 1974 at age 24, but later switched to provincial politics to lead the Saskatchewan Liberal Party. He returned to federal politics and represented Wascana and later Regina Wascana for eight terms beginning in 1993.
He was defeated by Conservative Michael Kram in the 2019 election.
