  REGINA A Moose Jaw doctor is asking residents to take the recent increase in COVID-19 variant cases in the city seriously. Two weeks ago, Moose Jaw and the South Central zone had 19 active cases of COVID-19. As of Wednesday, the area is sitting at 128, which is the most active cases the zone has seen during the pandemic. When Regina started to see their sudden increase in numbers, we started to see a similar trend here in Moose Jaw, Dr. Brad Thorpe, a family physician in Moose Jaw, told CTV News. Regina’s hospitals have been operating at capacity with COVID-19 patients for the past week and it’s a similar situation at the Dr. F.H. Wigmore Regional Hospital in Moose Jaw.

Regina city council votes to put John A Macdonald statue into storage

  REGINA Regina city council has decided to put remove the John A. Macdonald statue currently located in Victoria Park and put it in storage until a new location is found. Council voted 7-4 to approve the move on Wednesday. The move means the statue will be put in storage for a maximum of one year, and will be relocated to a location determined by council. Until that decision is made, city administration is expected to consult with the public about the best location for the statue and any signage that is needed near it. At the council meeting Wednesday, numerous delegates suggested the statue be put in a museum, moved behind the Legislative Building or moved to the RCMP Heritage Centre. It was also suggested the statue should have a plaque explaining the history of Macdonald, and his influence on confederation and Indigenous policies.

  REGINA A Regina mother is using her son’s battle with a COVID-19 variant to urge the public to take provincial guidelines seriously. It’s every mother’s worst nightmare, not being able to help their child when they’re sick. That’s the reality for Dianne Desjarlais-Cardinal whose 34-year-old son Matthew Cardinal is in the hospital with COVID-19. “My son’s going through it right now, he’s in the fight for his life,” Desjarlais-Cardinal said. Desjarlais-Cardinal describes her son as a healthy, vivacious man, but his health deteriorated after contracting the B.1.1.7 variant that is exploding in Regina.

NHL draft pick Roddy Ross back on track for Pats

  REGINA After a difficult start to the season, Pats’ goalie and NHL draft choice Roddy Ross has settled into the crease, earning his first two wins of the season back-to-back. “Getting those two big wins back to back was really huge not only for me, but for our guys,” Ross said on Wednesday. The 20-year-old started with season with five straight losses. Pats’ head coach Dave Struch said the team expected more success, but noted a young lineup in front of Ross. “We’re working hard defensively but we made a lot of mistakes that didn’t help Roddy out either,” Struch said.

Below normal moisture conditions expected in Southern Sask

  REGINA The Water Security Agency says low snow cover through much of southern Saskatchewan will lead to below normal moisture conditions in the area heading in to spring. Ron Podbielski, communications manager for the WSA, said the ground in the area is currently dry causing infiltration in to the soil and with no substantial increase to runoff there will be some issues with dry conditions. “Pending any precipitation in April because, of course, we still know that historically we get a lot of precipitation in April, again, tending to see a drier than normal spring as we look out right now, explained Podbielski of the situation.
