Input sought on idea to rename Sarnia Arena

Article content People in Sarnia are being asked what they think about renaming Sarnia Arena after the first player from the city to make the National Hockey League. Changing the name in honour of Chicago Blackhawks defenceman Pat “Whitey” Stapleton, also a member of Team Canada in the 1972 Summit Series with the former Soviet Union, was floated as an idea last spring by Sarnia’s Brian Keelan, shortly after Stapleton’s death on April 8, 2020. We apologize, but this video has failed to load. Try refreshing your browser. Stapleton was 79. After starting a petition that gathered about 2,100 signatures, including four on city council, the idea was recently posted for public feedback at speakupsarnia.ca.

Library deserves better location than Sarnia Arena

Author of the article: Letters Publishing date: Jan 29, 2021  •  January 29, 2021  •  1 minute read  •  Article content Relocating the Mall Road library to a jury-rigged location on the second floor of the Sarnia Arena shows a singular lack of foresight. Those with vision would look to a new purpose-built library that is done right, not some second-class “after thought” location. The economics of this move are sketchy and have not been well presented, and yet the public is being polled (sarniaspeaksout.com) to see if they think it is a good idea. The relocation cost of $100,000 mentioned at the city Zoom meeting sounds like a nice round pie-in-the-sky woefully inadequate number.
