Print If you wonder what’s on the minds of today’s teenagers, tune in tonight for the opening of the annual Plays by Young Writers Festival, which features five new plays by mostly San Diego writers, ages 13 to 18. The scripts featured in Playwrights Project’s 36th annual California Young Playwrights Contest, beat out 237 other submissions on a wide range of topics. Cecelia Kouma, executive director of the San Diego arts organization, said all five winning plays deal with the subject of “how do we move forward?” from grief, from fear of discovery, from discouragement and anxiety. “At the core, each asks ‘what do we let go of?’ and ‘how do we embrace a new reality as we step into an uncertain future?’” Kouma said. “It’s a question many of us wonder after a year of lockdown from COVID.”

There’s nothing “ironic” about Alanis Morissette’s new video covering John Lennon’s “Happy Xmas (War is Over”). Paying homage to Lennon’s 1971 recording with the Plastic Ono Band and to Yoko Ono as well, the three-minute video depicts Morissette in a “bed-in” with her family while at the same time celebrating the holidays in this most difficult of years. True to Lennon’s original message, Morissette’s “Happy Xmas” also envisions a brighter future. Lennon at the time sang out for an end to the Vietnam War; the implied message in Morissette’s cover today is hope for an end to the viral enemy we’re fighting together.
