The Malaysia Ministry of Health (MOH) has reported two additional confirmed cases of rabies among humans in Sarawak. Both the patients died.
The first case of rabies was a 52 -year -old Malaysian man. He denied having a history of being bitten or scratched by dogs or other mammals. However, he once arrested and killed a pet dog in the area of his factory worker’s house on 17 October 2020 after the dog bit two (2) workers there. However, the carcass of the dog was not handed over to the Sarawak Veterinary Services Department (DVS) for further investigation. On 31 January 2021, he was treated and admitted to a ward at Sibu Hospital for chest pain, numbness in his right hand, vomiting and shortness of breath. His health condition deteriorated to the point of requiring respiratory assistance on 5 February 2021. KUCHING (Dec 30): The Sarawak government is taking seriously the issue of smuggled meat in the country and has taken the necessary steps to check its entry into the state, said Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister s Department (Islamic Affairs & DBKU) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi.
He said the Sarawak government supported whatever action was needed by the authorities, especially the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) to address the issue. The Sarawak government also supports the intention of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs to establish a Halal Legal and Enforcement Committee which would also comprise Jakim and the State Islamic Religious Department (JAIN), he said.
Smuggling of frozen meat recurring in border states

Smugglers are using various techniques to bring in illegal meat into the country.
KUALA LUMPUR – Police today confirmed that frozen meat is being smuggled in several of the country’s state borders.
Without revealing more details, Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department director Datuk Seri Abd Rahim Jaafar said among the states facing this problem were Kelantan and Sarawak.

The issue is not a new one, he said, adding that the police were alert and had made arrests.
“Yes, there is such activity going on. The smuggling of frozen meat is rampant in these border areas but we have made arrests and seizures,” he said.
