SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - There is now a strong push to get the COVID vaccine in the arms of people in the underserved communities in Sarasota County and Manatee County.
“It is essential. We are seeing that African Americans are dying at three times the rate as everyone else,” said Dr. Lisa Merritt, executive director of the Multicultural Health Institute. “In our own area, we are having twice the rate of hospitalizations compared to the population and they account for a disproportionate amount of deaths as well.”

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - Many second dose vaccinations administered on Thursday afternoon at Sarasota Square Mall. First dose vaccinations were given earlier in the day.
“I had my shot Jan. 15, it went great,” said Violet Morton, a Bradenton resident. “I had my second dose today, they contacted me Tuesday afternoon by telephone and they left me a message, my appointment time and here I am.”
People getting their COVID vaccine shots say the entire process was smooth for the first shot and the second one too.

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - Florida state officials have developed another way for residents to register for available COVID-19 vaccines. It doesn’t replace your local health department’s website, but it will notify you when more appointments are available.
State officials on Friday announced the launch of an online pre-registration system for the COVID-19 vaccine. The site is called

“COVID-19 vaccines continue to arrive in Florida in extremely limited supply. As we await additional vaccine supply from the Federal Government, we urge currently eligible Florida residents to save their place in line by pre-registering today,” reads a note on the site.
