LOS ANGELES - A man accused of engaging in a gunfight with police that resulted in the death of an assistant manager at a Trader Joe s store in Silver Lake in 2018 was found competent Monday to stand trial.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Lisa B. Lench set a pretrial hearing for July 22.
Gene Evin Atkins, 31, has pleaded both not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity to murder in the killing of Melyda Maricela Corado. He is. also facing charges of attempted murder, attempted murder of a peace officer, assault on a peace officer with a semiautomatic firearm, kidnapping, fleeing a pursuing peace officer s motor vehicle while driving recklessly, grand theft of an automobile, discharge of a firearm with gross negligence, shooting at an occupied motor vehicle, false imprisonment of a hostage and mayhem.

A man accused of engaging in a gun battle with police that led to the accidental death of an assistant manager at a Trader Joe’s market in Silver Lake has been found competent to stand trial.
Gene Evin Atkins, 31, has pleaded not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity to murder in the July 2018 killing of Melyda Corado.
Officers had been chasing Atkins across the city, and he had fired on them numerous times during the pursuit, which police said began after he shot his grandmother.

Atkins crashed his car into a lamppost outside the Trader Joe’s and fired three rounds at LAPD Officers Sinlen Tse and Sarah Winans, according to a memorandum. Tse and Winans returned fire, with eight shots in total. One round struck Atkins in the elbow, according to the document. Another fatally wounded Corado.

LOS FELIZ On November 30, the Justice System Integrity Division of Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office issued a public statement noting that the officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a Trader Joe’s manager in July 2018 ruled the Los Angeles Police Department was “justified in using deadly force in an attempt to stop” the suspect, Gene Evin Atkins, 28.
Melyda Corado, 27, was accidentally killed during a shootout outside the store. Los Angeles Police Officers Sinlen Tse and Sarah Winans indicated they had no other choice, but to open fire on Atkins.
