State College OKs Block Grant Funds for Out of the Cold s Purchase of a Permanent Shelter Location

Council authorized an amendment to the borough’s plans for use of CDBG funds to direct $234,000 to Out of the Cold for its purchase and renovation of the Meetinghouse on Atherton, 318 S. Atherton St. The amendment will take $227,138.81 from the Borough First-Time Homebuyer Program and $6,861.19 from the operating budget for the now-defunct House of Care. Hillel at UGA, Black Student Union join discussion on allyship, social justice

Members of Hillel at University of Georgia and the UGA Black Student Union came together to host the Racial Justice Shabbat on March 26, discussing their experiences as minorities on campus and what they can do to become better allies for underrepresented communities. The event started with Black Student Union chair Joshua Patton explaining the organization s involvement in the university’s Black community and ways he’s seen a decline in group participation because of the pandemic. He also explained the adversities Black students face on campus due to feelings of isolation, lack of representation and other factors relating to the minority group’s overall marginalized presence. 

Heartland Hospice s Sarah Schafer Draws on Army, Nurse Training to Care for Terminally Ill

Sarah Schafer rarely lets people see her get emotional. The 39-year-old hospice worker at Heartland Hospice in Washington comforts her patients when they take their final breaths, offering steadfast, stoic support. But Schafer becomes so close to her patients that she often can’t help but join the families in their mourning. “Every time a patient passes, I’m coping too,” Schafer recently told The Missourian. “I cry with them, and I have cried with the families sometimes. I have always told myself that I’ve gained another angel watching over me. A lot of times as soon as I get in my car I start crying because it’s a peaceful experience.”
