Coastal study group idea sent back ashore AUGUSTA A resolution that would have created a 25-member study group to research how best to balance new coastal development with environmental conservation was shot down by a legislative committee last week after concerns over the resolve’s vague language and strong objections from the aquaculture industry.  “I hear the intention, but we had masses of testimony raising a lot of concerns about the way it was written,” said state Rep. Joyce “Jay” Mccreight (D-Harpswell), a member of the Marine Resources Committee.   The resolution, LD 1211, was put forward by state Rep. Lynne Williams (D-Bar Harbor) to “create multi-municipal communication, conflict resolution and cooperation” around the state’s bays and waterfront and give smaller towns more say over what happens in their region’s waters.

The measure, approved unanimously by the Committee on Innovation, Development, Economic Advancement and Business, ordered the Board of Funeral Services to develop new rules to protect drivers and passengers by next January. It still needs approval from the Legislature.

Rep Doudera, Sen Miramant bill banning chlorpyrifos heads to Governor with unanimous support

AUGUSTA The Maine Legislature’s Joint Standing Committee on Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry unanimously passed LD 316, An Act To Prohibit the Use of Chlorpyrifos  fittingly, on Earth Day April 20. The bill, sponsored by Representative Vicki Doudera and co-sponsored by Senator David Miramant, both of Camden, bans the use of chlorpyrifos, an organophosphate pesticide proven to cause adverse impacts on the environment, human health, and food system. The prohibition of the pesticide will begin in 2022, allowing limited exemptions for one year. Years of research has shown chlorpyrifos to be dangerous, and its residential indoor use was banned by the EPA in 2000, per a news release.
