Ephrata School Board makes big changes during Feb meeting

Tabletop exercise discusses expectations and responses for when the unthinkable happens

EPHRATA Emergencies do not respect time or place, and sometimes the unthinkable happens. Ephrata School District officials already have thought about the response if the unthinkable happened at Ephrata High School, but how would they get the information out to parents and district patrons? Getting the word out was the subject of a tabletop exercise with ESD officials, law enforcement and firefighters and the district’s insurance carriers Thursday.

EPHRATA – A portable at the Ephrata Middle School suffered a fire in its attic Friday morning, according to Ephrata School District Public Information Officer Sarah Morford.

Ephrata schools defeasing bonds due to inflation

EPHRATA – The Ephrata School District is moving forward with the process to defease a nearly $28 million bond approved by voters in 2019, said Superintendent Tim Payne in a Monday morning interview. “Where we’re at in the process is the board had a hearing,” Payne said. “You have sort of changed the bond away from its intended purpose, (so) you have to go through the same process (as the initial approval) whether you’re defeasing or you’re gonna say, ‘Gosh, we couldn’t build that building now.’”

Ephrata s Grant Elementary upgrades to go to bid

EPHRATA – The Ephrata School District will ask for bids for a complete remodel of Grant Elementary School, an ESD press release said. Plans to renovate the Ephrata High Performing Arts Center and PAC gymnasium have been placed on hold due to budgetary constraints though. “The world has changed in many ways since Ephrata initially approved the 2019 bond,” said Tim Payne, Ephrata School District Superintendent. “We could not have anticipated the pandemic-related cost increases we’ve experienced at projects currently underway at Columbia Ridge Elementary and Ephrata Middle School.” .
