Jurors called this book “a solid example of graphic journalism that gives a voice to the lives touched by the Guantanamo Bay prison, from prisoners and lawyers to social workers and military officers.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. “Guantanamo Voices: True Accounts from the World s Most Infamous Prison” edited by Sarah Mirk and published by Abrams ComicArts has won the 2021 Lynd Ward Graphic Novel Prize. Penn State University Libraries sponsors the juried award and its administrator, the Pennsylvania Center for the Book.
Itâs never a bad time to refresh your reading list, and itâs always a good idea to sprinkle in some homegrown favorites. Here are some of the best recent books by Oregon authors (we used five years as our cut off) to decorate your bookshelves and blow your minds. From dark dystopias to autobiographical essays to Parisian comedies to woolly mammoths, these local authors have taken on disparate themes and raised their individual, original voices to tell urgent, entertaining stories. As the assorted pressures of this year weighed down on your Graphic Content columnists, we periodically sought escape in our reading material but many of our favorite comics titles for 2020 tackled serious matters head on: racism, police violence, the refugee crisis, colonialism, mental illness. There’s some humor to be found in the selections below, which are far-flung in time and space. But what’s most remarkable, in this excruciating year, is how these books and the medium itself seem capable of illuminating just about anything.
