UGA alumna Sarah Mayo and current doctoral student Mikaela Warner have both been moderating the Facebook group, âAthens GA COVID-19 Resources and Discussionâ of almost 5,000 members since the beginning of the pandemic to help answer questions and provide resources to the Athens community.
The Red & Black spoke with these moderators to learn more about what they do and how they help the Athens community through their group.

The Red & Black: Can you tell me a little bit more about the group itself and when it started?
Warner: Originally, the group was actually made out of a mutual aid movement in Athens. The Facebook group was posed as a way to kind of connect the Athens community with all of these different efforts going on so that we can do things like pay people s rent or get people food. A TEAM of volunteers who worked tirelessly to get Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to frontline health workers during the pandemic have been recognised for their efforts. The group - Addingham Visor Army - raised thousands of pounds to source and distribute visors to Airedale Hospital and local GPs. Now Addingham Civic Society has presented the seven women with Civic Pride Awards. Due to lockdown they met in the centre of the village to receive the awards and couldn’t even shake hands. The wording on their certificates says: “A Civic Pride Award in recognition of the huge effort made by the group to fund, produce and deliver personal protective equipment for front line workers during the 2019 Covid-19 Pandemic.”

Riverhead Town’s Law Enforcement Advisory Panel has scheduled two “listening tour” meetings for this week, according to Supervisor Yvette Aguiar.
The first, held via Zoom, took place Tuesday morning and was attended by about 20 people, although only three spoke. The second Zoom session is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 14, 5 p.m..
In order to listen or participate, you must register in advance, according to Police Chief David Hegermiller. Registration information can be found on the town website, he said.
“These are only listening sessions,” the chief noted. “There will be back-and-forth as far as questions and answers.”
