Water Safety New Zealand s Karen Richardson says there’s evidence more women are taking risks around water, resulting in an increasing number of “fatal and non-fatal drownings”.
There’s a perception that men are more at risk of drowning because they take more risks than women. But with increasing numbers of females represented in the country’s drowning statistics, Water Safety New Zealand (WSNZ) policy and research advisor Karen Richardson says that perception should be shifting, with more targeted prevention campaigns needed in response. Richardson, whose study looking at the gender data gap involving women in what WSNZ deems to be “non-fatal or fatal drownings” was recently published in the
