LAWRENCE – Students from each of the Kansas Board of Regents four-year public universities will share work during Kansas’ Undergraduate Research Days. The 2021 event will take place online March 2-4.
Ten University of Kansas students will share their work during the free event, which is hosted this year by Fort Hays State University.
“This event is a chance for our students to highlight the undergraduate research opportunities they have had as a result of their studies at the University of Kansas, as well as how this work enhances their own education while also improving the lives of Kansans. Although it is sad that we cannot meet in the Capitol, this virtual event should make it easier for more people to see the wonderful work being done by undergraduate students at KU and across the state,” said Alison Olcott, director of the Center for Undergraduate Research.

Over 200 people attended a virtual town hall on Feb. 4 put on by a group of University of Kansas faculty members who object to a new Kansas Board of Regents policy that would eliminate tenure protections.
A group of University of Kansas faculty hosted a virtual town hall Thursday night to discuss a recent Kansas Board of Regents policy that one faculty member said would be “the beginning of the end of tenure” in higher education.
The group, called OneKU, is composed of faculty who consider themselves promoters and defenders of quality public higher education and advocates for KU’s mission as a research institution dedicated to the creation of knowledge for the public good. The group’s event, which was called “Defend KU,” gathered over 200 attendees on Zoom.

LAWRENCE This spring, 41 KU students will receive an Undergraduate Research Award. UGRA recipients are awarded a $1,000 scholarship as they work on mentored research and creative projects.
Students apply for UGRAs by writing a four-page research proposal under the guidance of a mentor. Faculty reviewers evaluate the applications based on the merit of the applicant s proposal and a recommendation from the mentor.
“Undergraduate research allows students to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world problems, and experiential learning opportunities like these add richness to their educational journey at KU,” said Alison Olcott, director of the Center for Undergraduate Research and associate professor of geology.
