The local chapter of the League of Women Voters took part in the organization’s Day of Action Thursday with a conference highlighting their push for fair redistricting this year.
The event took place in the Christian County Justice Center, and it’s something that League chapters take part in each year that focuses on what issues they want to see addressed. Every ten years the dividing lines between districts for the U.S. House of Representatives, state representatives and state senators are redrawn based on census data and it’s set to take place in 2022.
Brechwald says the Day of Auction topic was not meant to criticize the current legislature but to offer a way to help the city’s and county’s voices be heard.
The league hopes that legislators will host public meetings to receive input on the proposed maps and allow everyone to be a part of the entire process.
The new redistricting process will get underway after all of the 2020 Census data is received later this year. The new maps could be voted on during the 2022 Kentucky legislative session.
