Letter: Vermont lawmakers flagrantly usurp the State Constitution

Don t miss the big stories. Like us on Facebook.   To the editor: The Vermont State Constitution lays out Vermont s governmental structure and also our rights as inhabitants of Vermont. Therefore, it is understood to be the supreme foundational law of the state of Vermont. The aim and overall purpose of the Vermont State Constitution is communicated in Article 7. It was written for the common benefit of all the people, for equal consideration, equal freedom and equal justice. It is expressly not for the advantage or favoritism of a person or set of persons. Vermonters’ expectations that the Vermont State Constitution will be respected, adhered to and preserved is justified by the oath and allegiance Vermont elected officials take as they are elected to their various offices. That specific oath and allegiance is as follows: To be true and faithful to the State of Vermont and not do any act or thing injurious to the Constitution or government.

Vermont Symphony and Fans Bid Farewell to Beloved Conductor Jaime Laredo

Jaime Laredo In a 2017 interview on the Violin Channel, renowned violinist and conductor Jaime Laredo was asked which side of him the public never sees. I m very cranky, and I m very often in a terrible mood, he answered with a laugh. Nobody ever sees that of me. Indeed. As Laredo s 20-year tenure as music director of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra comes to an end this week, people around the state are remembering him as the nicest guy ever as well as a beloved musician and mentor. He s so generous and so kind, and I think that vibe has become a part of who the orchestra is, said David Ludwig, who became the VSO s composer-in-residence in 2004 and is now the new-music adviser. Orchestras often reflect their conductors, and this orchestra is a family.

Senate Judiciary resuming debate on sexual assault bill

Don t miss the big stories. Like us on Facebook.   MONTPELIER — A bill updating Vermont’s sexual assault law is scheduled to be taken up again by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, with the hope that revised language on consent will allow the bill to move forward. The bill, H.183, was passed by the House by voice vote in March. It would update state law to clarify that sexual consent cannot be granted “when the other person is incapable of consenting to the sexual act due to substantial impairment by alcohol, drugs, or other intoxicants and that condition is known or reasonably should be known by the person.”

Look Ahead, Vermont: Pension fallout, collecting race data, and tackling the budget

Don t miss the big stories. Like us on Facebook.   In honor of baseball’s Opening Day last week, I’ll start with a question: What does hitting or pitching a baseball have in common with solving the state’s pension funding crisis? The answer? If it was easy, anyone could do it. When I was a would-be high school baseball player, I read “The Art of Pitching” by Tom Seaver and “The Science of Hitting” by Ted Williams, hoping their Cooperstown-quality guidance would help me make the varsity roster. “Would-be,” because I lacked the athletic ability to turn their sage advice into a spot on the squad.
