New Covid-19 variant present in South Gloucestershire

A new Covid-19 variant is present in South Gloucestershire. The new variant was first discovered in Kent and has now been confirmed to be present in Bristol and parts of South Gloucestershire. Sara Blackmore, director of public health at South Gloucestershire Council, said: We are working closely with the Public Health England (PHE) South West Health Protection team to investigate a cluster of cases in Bristol and South Gloucestershire of a mutated form of the UK Covid-19 variant which was first identified in Kent. This is not the same variant as identified in South Africa or Brazil. Public Health England routinely investigates samples of positive Covid-19 cases as part of the national surveillance programme and if new variants or mutations are identified, these are investigated to ascertain if they are more transmissible or harmful; also to identify if they are becoming more widespread.
