Akron Council sets election to replace Ward 1 Councilman Rich Swirsky

The clerk of council in Akron is accepting applications to replace Councilman Rich Swirsky, who died May 26 after battling acute myeloid leukemia for six months. By the end of June, Council President Margo Sommerville and Vice President Jeff Fusco expect council to appoint an applicant who lives in Ward 1 to serve until the end of 2022. That year, the city will hold a special primary and general election to fill the final year of Swirsky’s term, which would have expired in 2023 when all of council and the mayor are up for reelection. The City of Akron Charter requires council to fill any vacancy within 30 days.
