Eco-friendly experts advise on plans for Nationwide s £50m green homes site in Swindon

NATIONWIDE is funding a £50 million plan to build one of the UK’s largest energy-efficient housing developments. Each of the 239 homes at the Oakfield project will meet the highest EPC-A energy efficiency rating. At the moment, only six per cent of new properties are built to this standard. The Swindon-based building society s landmark development could become a blueprint for the construction of more environmentally-friendly homes around the country. The company is bringing together green developers and experts like Igloo Regeneration and the Active Building Centre to advise on the plans. The properties come with air source heat pumps instead of gas boilers, as well as solar panels. Electric vehicle charging points will be provided on the street and homes will be wired so that the owners can easily install charging points on their own properties.

Approaching the end of the most punishing year of their careers and heading into an uncertain new year, business leaders are united in one belief: the volatility of the past 12 months is far from over. “I spend a lot of my time looking at all those spinning plates out there,” says Sean Menke, chief executive of Sabre, the flight booking and hotel reservations technology company, whose prospects are tied to the unpredictable fate of the travel industry. “You’re trying to do a forward calculation of what airline capacity is going to be like in the next two years. You think about the impact on travel agencies and the hospitality scene. If you’re dealing with a slow recovery, what are the other options to grow your business?”
