A Japanese court ruled Wednesday that not allowing same-sex marriages is unconstitutional, in the country’s first judicial ruling on the issue.
The Sapporo District court ruled that, since sexuality is not a matter of preference, denying same-sex couples the same rights granted to heterosexual couples can’t be justified.
While the landmark decision doesn’t immediately have any legal consequences, it signals to marriage equality supporters that legalized same-sex unions could potentially become a reality in the future.
“Today’s ruling recognized that we actually exist,” a plaintiff known by the pseudonym Takashi, told CNN. “I want a society where sexual minorities have hope and a choice in their future.”
