walensky for steadfast and unwavering focus during the pandemic. the world health organization says the global health crisis associated with covid is over. between 7 and 20 million people died as a result of the virus. director general warned countries that even though the pandemic emergency is over, covid is still a threat and is here to stay. as so many of us believed from the beginning they don t just miraculously go away, there is something you have to learn to live with and are still doing that to this day. sandra: and all around the world and so many good-byes to dr. walensky, and dr. saphier says i hope you will focus on efforts to advance science for the betterment of public health with less political influence. john: certainly a lot of criticism during her tenure at the cdc. sandra: indeed.
think that at a certain point, ten years, 20, 50 years from now, like everything is going to go down in operating rooms without human beings? do you think it s just going to be a bunch of tools and computers with a surgeon remote operating from somewhere else? i m very old school about this. i think you need a doctor s judgment. i think that we could augment our judgment with information and realtime. let s look at radiology. i mean, you know, if you are a breast radiologist and you are looking for breast cancer like our own dr. saphier, don t miss this, look at the hundreds of other images but don t want to be in the position somebody sues you because artificial intelligence said one thing and you said something else. so i think as long as it remains a tool it is cost effective.
dr. saphier, she questioned whether or not that is going to further complicate this growing, you know, group of people in this country that are anti-vaccine, right, or that they fear there are too many vaccines for children, and to add one to the list is a major concern to have more parents back off of what are necessary vaccines in this country. yeah, i think it s a very important point, sandra, and we are seeing that, that adding covid to the routine panel for pediatric vaccines i don t think was a wise decision and i think as you pointed out it had a potential negative consequences of having parents that were on the fence about vaccination programs to actually even move away some of the critical vaccines that we think all children should get. so i think hopefully the united states, cdc and other groups will reconsider, particularly in light of the who recommendations
