concern for himself, for his wife, for the united states senate, he would step down today. i don t think that s going to happen. he s going to go down swinging, but i wish and hope he would step down today. it would be know ing there s no chance to do it. particularly in the wake of what you saw with george ity leader? that s the bigger issue. i thought about that in the sense this is different than the house. the house, if if you try to get santos out, you had to go through a special election. as soon as he s out, the governor appoints somebody. it would still be 51-49. but for the sake of the institution, i think he needs to step down. the public it seems like congressional. and let s not forget more than 70% of new jerseyans said the last indictment that he should go.
santos embroiled in a host of legal and ethical problems most recently indictment on felony charges but some of his g.o.p. colleagues are not moving as fast as the democrats would like, not surprisingly. senior congressional correspondent chad pergram is live on capitol hill tonight with that. good evening, chad. good evening, bret. the house blocked the democratic effort to expel george santos. the vote 220 to 202. republicans pushed to refer santos to the ethics committee and not vote on expulsion. democrats say that s a copout. isn t this about getting those republicans on the record voting against expelling him versus just getting santos out. we think everyone should vote on the report whether he should be expelled or not and republicans would have a chance to do so if the expulsion vote came to the floor. ironically some g.o.p. members concede privately they made need santos to pass their debt ceiling package. talks continued today. house speaker kevin mccarthy wants a fra
he sort of any sort of primary campaign? there are already prime minister challengers lining up against santos. he said santos has a lot of things going on. i think he has other things to focus on in his life other than running for re-election. i went on to ask him about calling on him to resign. mccarthy has not called on him to resign, saying there is a process that plays out here and members have been indicted, cleared and still continued to serve. his bar has been different on that issue. but he did say that he would call on santos to resign if the house ethics committee, which is also launching an investigation into santos, comes back and finds that santos broke the law. i asked mccarthy directly, i said, if there is if the ethics committee comes back and finds that santos broke the law, alleges that he did, would you call on him to resign? mccarthy said, quote, yes. so that is the speaker s bar in trying to push santos out. now, there is a serious political consideration here
