SANTA MONICA The Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) will be joining the Santa Monica Police Activities League (PAL) to host the Inaugural Rick Crocker Challenge, a 5K run/walk pairing the youth of our community with SMPD Officer on Wednesday, May 26.
Lt. Rudy Flores of the SMPD noted to Canyon News that the event is in honor of fallen SMPD Officer and Marine Corps Reserve Major, Ricardo Crocker, who was killed by a rocket propelled grenade while on tour in Iraq on May 26, 2005. Prior to being redeployed to Iraq, Rick was assigned at PAL where he was a passionate advocate of programs which mentored PAL youth in their scholastic and outdoor activities.

SANTA MONICA The Santa Monica City Council on April 27 selected 11 members to serve on Santa Monica’s newly-created Public Safety Reform and Oversight Commission (PSROC), including two young adults. According to a press release from the city of Santa Monica website, this is the first civilian oversight body for the Santa Monica Police Department.
“Congratulations to our eleven new commissioners, who will serve our community in an important role as we work to ensure that all residents not only are safe but feel safe,” said Mayor Sue Himmelrich. “The City Council looks forward to the recommendations, expertise, and experience of the Public Safety Reform and Oversight Commissioners. We also thank every resident who applied to make a difference in our community.”

Adrian Blake Mitchell, professional male ballet dancer at the Mikhailovsky Ballet Company, will livestream both a Master Class and also will host Westside Ballet s Dance Talks series - Zooming from St. Petersburg on President s Day, Monday February 15, in honor of Black History Month and to support Westside Ballet s ongoing Crisis Relief Fund.
An alumnus of the ballet school, Mitchell offered to teach a class to support Westside Ballet s boys ballet program and as well to share his professional ballet journey as a part of Westside Ballet s newest installment in their Dance Talks series. The Master Class will run from 9:30-10:50am on the President s Day National Holiday and will be offered at $15 for participants not currently enrolled at Westside
