ORIGINAL STORY - With a drop in the number of COVID-19 cases, Santa Barbara County is on track to re-open elementary schools. School districts all across Santa Barbara County are preparing and waiting for the green light from the county that will allow them to make a decision. For some school districts like Orcutt Union, their board of trustees is meeting Monday night to discuss whether to open once they get the go-ahead.

Dr. Henning Ansorg said his health order will take effect on Tuesday, Jan. 26, at 8 a.m. Dr. Ansorg welcomed the change to the regional order, but said local COVID-19 case numbers remain high and ICU capacity is still very low. The update puts local businesses back in the state s Purple Tier which allows outdoor dining with restrictions on the space between tables and the households allowed to sit together.

Courtesy of Cottage Hospital Intensive care unit bed capacity is reaching a limit in Santa Barbara County, and health officials warn it may get worse. “In light of our current situation, I am at a loss, said Santa Barbara County Public Health Officer Dr. Henning Ansorg this week. I honestly don’t know what to say anymore.   Ansorg said the county is seeing the results of Thanksgiving gatherings and called the situation dire as ICU capacity is now below 1% in Santa Barbara County. He warns the situation may get worse, as the county will not know the impact of recent holiday behavior for a couple of weeks.
