Elliott is also a community organizer who facilitated the effort to create self government in Isla Vista, and has worked with activists to channel energy into local progressive change.
“There is tremendous energy in our community right now from grassroots activists and volunteers who want to build a better world for women, people of color, working folks, and the LGBTQ+ community, Elliott said. As chair, I want to continue to support and empower these movements.”
The SBCDP reminds local Democrats that there is an election in November for mayor of the city of Santa Barbara, and council seats for Districts 4, 5 and 6. The Democratic Party will be interviewing candidates seeking endorsement at the regularly scheduled committee meeting on April 1.

Joyce has ties to many of the same party activists as Murillo, but has not worked as deeply in the trenches as Murillo on city of Santa Barbara issues.
He has been involved predominantly on state legislative issues, and provided local constituent service. He launched his Coffee with a Black Guy company in 2016, as a way to facilitate difficult conversations about race. James Joyce is a respected member of the community, who many of us know through his work with Hannah-Beth Jackson and Coffee with a Black Guy, said Gail Teton-Landis, chair of the Santa Barbara County Democratic Party. We certainly hope he will participate in our endorsement process when we interview candidates in April.

Long before Susan Epstein was a Goleta Union School District board member, she was writing stories as a student journalist during her sophomore year of high school.
She wrote an award-winning investigative piece, an expose, as she recalls it, on a sudden proposal to eliminate electives at her school. It was in accordance with state law, Epstein s principal told her at the time. Showing early signs of her analytical style, Epstein deep-dived into the story, discovered it was a choice, not a mandate, to eliminate electives. She broke the story.
Housing and Development Newsletter It took my life back to my childhood years, Alvarez said. People I had gone to elementary, junior high and high school with reached out when they heard I was running. Also, former co-workers, supervisors, teachers, my kids’ friends, their parents, my siblings and their friends, and current and former school board members whom work or have worked for, all embraced my candidacy and supported me. It was an overwhelming show of community support that surfaced my strong community ties.
She encourages other candidates in her situation in the future to be authentic and trust their intuition when deciding to run.
