The Marriage of Mathematics and Sacred Art: Piero della Francesca’s ‘The Baptism of Christ’
“We don’t go to art for information. Rather it’s the experience.” Roger Scruton, philosopher
Piero della Francesca’s “The Baptism of Christ,” which hangs in the National Gallery in London’s Trafalgar Square, was rather like a personal shrine to me. I visited it frequently “for the experience
.”
When the newsroom became too much of a gallimaufry, I would jump on the Tube to the National Gallery. Ten minutes later I would stand and stare at the painting. A soothing quiet would course through my veins. The painting was reminder, like that hymn by the Quaker John Greenleaf Whittier:
If you glance quickly at a map of Italy, you will probably not spot San Sepolcro. This is a small, quaint town to the east of Florence and north of Arezzo. If you draw straight lines joining up the three places, you will end up with an almost perfe.

A very Florentine fleur-de-lis has been planted at piazzale Michelangelo in a symbolic gesture as the city defends its biodiversity and protects the bee population.
Consisting of 4,000 plants, including marigolds and petunias, the flower bed forms a black- and yellow-bee and spells out the words Bee The Change. The gesture extends beyond the showpiece in the piazzale as borage seeds, known to attract the insects, are being sown on the banks of the Arno River and on the city’s roundabouts. The initiative is financed by Aboca, the healthcare company headquartered in Sansepolcro, Tuscany, whose business ethos is centred on growing its own organic plants to extract the essences used in its widely respected products.
