UNF s high school social justice camp returns following year of protests

Following a year of student-led protests and rallies calling for racial justice in the classroom, school names that better represent their peers, mental health resources and updated curriculum, a local college will host its annual summer camp to help those young leaders hone in on their demands.  Registration for the University of North Florida s Bridges Summer Camp a free online summer camp for young people who want to explore racial equity, social justice and activist perspectives closes Friday, but may be extended based on interest. The camp prides itself as a way to prepare student leaders to fight racism and oppression.

How students forced Duval Schools to confront classroom racial justice

After months of watching civil rights demonstrations through the country and on the streets of Jacksonville at times even participating themselves the students were surprised when in February the school district didn t seize the opportunity to use Black History Month as an education tool to drive lessons about local racial justice movements and Black history. Instead, the school district launched its own inaugural month-long campaign for mental health and suicide awareness called You Matter Month. While that campaign had its own issues because it encouraged students to #TakeOffYourMask during a global pandemic, some students worried the language minimized Black Lives Matter campaigns and hijacked the attention from the sole month annually centered around Black lives.
