The Supreme Court on Tuesday imposed costs of ₹3 lakh on former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt for repeatedly filing petitions in relation to a drug planting case against him.
Sanjiv Bhatt's petitions challenged Gujarat High Court’s orders dismissing his prayers to transfer the trial to another court, to audio and video record trial court proceedings and seeking permission to summon 19 witnesses.
The application for recusal was filed in a plea by Bhatt seeking permission to produce additional evidence before the Gujarat High Court in his appeal against conviction in a custodial death case.s
As a High Court judge, Justice Shah had in 2011 refused to set aside a trial court ruling rejecting an application for deferment of framing of charges in the custodial death case Bhatt was convicted in.
