Miller uniquely suited to help lead By Staff | Feb 9, 2021 To the editor: I am writing to endorse Mike Miller for Sanibel City Council. I have known him for 20 years, since he retired as vice president and treasurer of Owens-Corning in Toledo, Ohio, and moved to Sanibel. Soon after he moved and established his elder law practice, I became aware of the many hours he spent using his expertise to do pro bono work for older people who needed his help. His extensive financial background as a financial executive and certified public accountant with nationally recognized companies has been well known, making him eminently qualified to help direct the financial future of Sanibel. In addition, he has been an integral part of the community as president of the Committee for the Islands, president of the Sanibel Bicycle Club, and serving on the Parks and Recreation Committee. What is not as well known is that for five years he worked with the bicycle club on New Year’s Eve with BINGO to ra

Shocked, dismayed by Maughan’s final pitch By Staff | Jan 26, 2021 To the editor: On Jan. 21, the Sanibel & Captiva Islands Chamber of Commerce sponsored a virtual “town hall” Candidate Forum for the six candidates seeking election to the Sanibel City Council, in order to introduce themselves and to present their credentials and perspectives to Sanibel voters. Kudos to the chamber; the forum was an invaluable opportunity for Sanibel residents to form an opinion on the choices available to them in the city council election for the three open seats to be held on March 2. This election does not have an incumbent seeking re-election. Miller will have my vote | News, Sports, Jobs - SANIBEL-CAPTIVA - Island Reporter, Islander and Current

Miller will have my vote By Staff | Jan 20, 2021 To the editor: We should all be pleased and encouraged that Mike Miller is a candidate for the Sanibel City Council. Mike brings a rare combination of qualifications that we need on the council now. In many respects Sanibel is and hopefully will remain the small town contemplated in the Sanibel Vision Statement. We don’t have chain stores, fast food restaurants or high rise hotels on the beach but we’re not the same Sanibel we used to be either. Sanibel now has a $60 million-plus annual budget, millions of dollars in pension liability, capitol projects, voted debt to manage and operating expenses to pay. On top of that we’re facing an ongoing threat to our water quality, a pandemic that is out of control and the prospect of rising sea levels caused by climate change.
