I’ve signed a contract to write a biography of a once-feared man. Not a problem if that man were Ned Kelly or Lavrentiy Beria because they share the happy circumstance, for a biographer, of being too dead to complain, to nitpick, to set you straight, or to take their biographer by the trachea the way a lion does a zebra and clamp down until it is an ex-zebra or an ex-Anson. But my biographee (the dude in the book, whom I’ll call XXL for anonymity’s sake, and because he’s two times larger than life) is alive and kicking. We meet at his place, or at cafes, and sit and chat about his life. I ask questions and record his answers on my phone and then transcribe the interviews onto my computer.
